The original town of Tholoma was located near Conta and Cholula, indigenous villages on the banks of the Balaliama or Choloma river, documented first in the fifth letter of the conquistador Hernán Cortés about his conquest of the province of Honduras. It was also mentioned in the work of Berna Díaz on the same events in 1524-1525. In 1536, it was mentioned in the document about the San Pedro de Puerto de Caballos Foundation (today San Pedro Sula) but it was not given to any Spaniard in the San Pedro Repartimiento, 2 of course in 1536 it was vacated and not part of no colonial document after that year effective.
The town of Candelaria (Nuestra Señora de Candelaria de Masca), originally San Pedro Masca, was founded on the north coast between Omoa and Manabique in pre-Hispanic times. The village was moved to the Bijao river in 1683-84 for safety. The village was plundered many times by pirates and Miskitos / Zambos on the coast at their request of 1714.3 moved again, because it was looted again, south of the Bijao River, probably near El Boquerón in 1698. Candelaria / Masca It was a town of Lenca speakers. Von Hagen (in Los Tolupanes de Honduras) made an error in identifying the Candelaria near Choloma, with the Candelaria, reduction of Xicaque Indians (torrupanes) near Guaymas. Today there is this Candelaria in the Department of Yoro, near Guaymas, north of Morazán, Yoro.
Of course, the last inhabitants of Our Lady of Candelaria decided to be part of the new town of Choloma, founded in 1804, forming the neighborhood of Candelaria de Choloma. Choloma in 1894 would be constituted as a municipality under the name of El Paraíso. This appellation would last for 39 years until it changed to its current denomination.
In the 19th century, the banana industry developed and the following century the cultivation of sugarcane began; However, both plantations declined and their inhabitants were dedicated to livestock and the cultivation of citrus and basic grains.
The municipality covers an area of 471.1 km² and the festivities are celebrated in the month of February in honor of the Virgin of Lourdes. Among the tourist attractions of the area is the lagoon of Ticamaya.
